Match Report: Doncaster take crucial victory over Plymouth

By Rovers Reporter Zak Armitage.

Doncaster Rovers saw out an almighty test from visiting Plymouth Argyle to take an important victory at the Keepmoat Stadium, which makes it two wins out of two at the helm for boss Andy Butler.

Rovers made a positive start to the game in South Yorkshire and took the lead after seven minutes with Tom Anderson directing a header past Michael Cooper in the Plymouth goal to put Rovers in front.

Andy Butler's side continued to pile on the pressure  and nearly made it two shortly after, when Taylor Richards started a mazing run before testing Cooper who produced an excellent save to keep the deficit at one.

The game continued to prove end-to-end with a couple of chances for both teams. Plymouth came close to equalising when former-Rovers striker Niall Ennis saw his attempt denied after a well-worked set-piece from the visitors. At the other end Southampton loanee Josh Sims nearly added Rovers’ second but failed to beat Cooper in the Plymouth goal.

After a hectic first 15 minutes, the game settled down for a short period before Joe Edwards missed a glorious opportunity to level up the game for Plymouth, this a massive let-off for Doncaster.

The sides went into the half-time break with Doncaster holding a slender lead in what was an even contest.

The game once again sparked into life immediately from the restart and it took Rovers just two minutes to double their advantage with former Cardiff striker Omar Bogle guiding a header into the goal after a lovely cross from James Coppinger.

But true to the end-to-end style of the game Plymouth responded immediately with a lovely flick from former Doncaster striker Ennis gliding past Louis Jones in the Rovers goal.

This provided a massive confidence boost to Ryan Lowe's Plymouth, who had a string of chances to level the game shortly after. Including a glorious chance for Luke Jephcott who saw his effort saved miraculously by young Louis Jones who has been in excellent form for Rovers as of late.

Ultimately Doncaster withstood the pressure from Plymouth and could've even made it 3-1 late on in the game when substitute Mager Gomes was denied.

The win on Saturday was a crucial one for Andy Butler's side who dug deep to take a hard-fought win over a gutsy Plymouth who pushed Rovers all the way.

The result means it's two wins out of two for Andy Butler since his appointment just under a week ago now and sees Rovers move up to 5th in the League Table, with games in hand on the teams around them in the top six.
